Ahmed Hassan Awke, who was one of Somalia’s best known journalists, has died in Jigjiga town in the Somali region of Ethiopia on Monday night after a sudden illness.
A sister to the late veteran journalist confirmed his death to Somali media.
Ahmed had worked with various media houses including the BBC Somali Service, the VOA Somali Service and the state-owned Radio Mogadishu.
He started his career in 1972 at Radio Mogadishu where he used to present news, sports and entertainment programs.
He also worked with several of the privately-owned Somali TVs including Universal, HCTV and Somaliland National TV.
He joined the BBC Somali service in 1996.
He had been the spokesman of former President Siyad Barre since the government collapsed in 1991.
The remains of the journalist is expected to be flown to Hargeisa for burial in the coming days.
Somaliland President Ahmed Silanyo extended his condolences to the family, relatives and the entire people of Somaliland for the loss of the former journalist.
