The search for two boys in Willmar near the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds ended after dark with the pair being found in the shallow water of a lake, both apparent drowning victims, authorities said Wednesday.
Idris M. Hussein, age 10 and Ahmed Sahane Hashi, age 11, both of Willmar, were discovered shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday underwater near the fairgrounds entrance, police said.
Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive both boys as medical helicopters were standing nearby. The boys were taken to Rice Hospital in Willmar, where they were pronounced dead, police added.
The drama unfolded starting shortly before 6 p.m., when authorities were called to 7th Street NW. near the fairgrounds and were told the boys were missing, police said.
A parent of one of the boys said her son and a friend had left a home near the fairgrounds, and she later found one boy’s shoe floating near a dock on the lake, authorities said.
That set off an extensive land and water search in and around the lake involving numerous law enforcement agencies. Four hours or so passed before the boys were found in the lake.
The boys were students at Kennedy Elementary School in Willmar, Principal Kristin Dresler told the West-Central Tribune.
