Kenyan man found hanging on a tree in New Jersey, US

Police in Jersey city, New Jersey, have launched investigations into the circumstances leading to the death of a Kenyan man whose body was found hanging on a tree in one of the city’s parks.

On Tuesday, the body of Jeffrey Kililibwa, 61, was discovered dangling from a tree by a passerby in Lafayette Park.

Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman, Gene Rubino, told a media briefing that Jersey City Police received a call from a woman taking her morning walk near Lafayette Park who said she saw a man hanging from a tree.

“Police arrived at scene and discovered a Kenyan man in his 60s suspended from the tree on the west side of the park,” Rubino said. “He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” added Rubino.

Although the police said they did not suspect foul play in the death, pressure is mounting from the Kenyan Community in New Jersey who want full investigations carried out saying the manner in which Mr Kilibwa died was suspect. “His hands were bound with a rope. That’s not how people hang themselves. We must know the truth,” said Nelson Mogesha, long time friend of the deceased.

It has also emerged that a day before he died, Mr Kilibwa had been held at a New Jersey police station after being found walking the city streets in what his friend described as “a confused state of mind”.

And according to Mr Mogesha, the deceased had just been relieved of his job in a city mall and this weighed heavily on him. “He was not himself. I think there were other issues but the loss of his job was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Mogesha.

Police at the Livingstone Police station, where Kilibwa was held, are looking for a woman whom they say is the acquaintance who came for him. “She is a person of interest as she introduced herself as his friend and the police released him to her,” said Mogesha.

The latest incident comes only days after a 33-year-old Kenyan man shot dead his mother in law before turning the gun on himself in Bethlehem, Georgia.

In the same week, 21-year-old Felix Achoch died from injuries inflicted in a beating by several assailants in the US city of Indianapolis, Indiana.

And early last week, a 32-year-old Kenyan man died after being shot in mysterious circumstances in Dallas, Texas.

I agree there is a serious race problem in this country, but reporting a story in this manner only make things worse.

    • Mike D says:

oh you mean you reporting the truth will make it worse

      • Bobbi D says:

What truth? At this point all there is vague speculation which you seem willing to paint a picture with? Why jump the gun? Seems to be an awful of ‘truths’ you’re missing.

        • Freddie Myers says:

Damn! This is only one incidence where police say they don’t suspect fowl play in this mans hanging. I’m wondering how stupid the New Jersey police can be so stupid? they don’t suspect fowl play in this mans hanging, If they think it isn’t fowl play, how did this mans hands become tied up? Was he sitting on a horse when he was hung? was there a ladder there he jumped off of to hang himself? Extreme Racism is Alive in America, YES BLACKS ARE STILL BEING HUNG IN THE GREAT UNITED STATES. Yet America tries to dictate to other countries to deal with their racial issues, I say America should sweep its own shores of racism before dictating racial policies to other countries. I feel that America is the most Racist country in the world. But who am I? I’m one with an opinion.

uh, Mike, I think one of the main points of the story is how confusing it is. The truth seems not to have been identified at this point.

    • ashira says:

then how is it suppose to be reported. The story speaks of the incident. apparently you do not want the world to know that people are still being lynched

    • Sidney Baker says:

Story’s of this nature must be reported, for justice must be done, A crime was committed. We will have to investigate to see if losing his job was racial also. The world is watching this race problem we have in America.

that indeed its a shame we are in the year 2013, this things shouldn’t be happening… Sad, truly sad!

  3. MzCora says:

To keep things like this quiet would encourage more people to do it because the perpetrators would likely think they could get away with it. As this stands, it is being investigated and, hopefully, the perps will be found.

So, the man’s hands were tied behind his back? And where is this being debated as a suicide? In Florida? Oh, you say New Jersey. Ok………….
