Somalia evacuates hundreds of special police forces from central town

Hundreds of Somali special police forces, known as Harma’ad (cheetah), have been evacuated from the central Somalia town of Dusamareb ahead of a conference there that would bring together leaders of the five regional states in the country.

About 200 Harma’ad troops were evacuated by a plane to Mogadishu after Jubbaland and Puntland leaders demanded that the troops leave the town ahead of their arrival.

The Harma’ad special police force take order from the central government in Mogadishu and have been accused in the past of interfering in the Galmudug state’s presidential elections and also in clashes that expelled Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’ah fighters from Dusamareb.

The Somali regional leaders are expected to discuss the upcoming elections and the strained relations between the federal government and regional administrations, among other topics, in their meeting scheduled for Thursday 9th July.
